455: What’s the Point in Winning If You Lose Yourself in the Process? (Summer Shift Week 8)
About this episode
What good is reaching the finish line first if you no longer recognize—or respect—the person who crossed it?
We live in a world obsessed with winning.
Get the promotion. Close the deal. Reach the goal. Beat the competition. Prove that you are the best.
But there is a question we do not ask nearly enough:
What is your success costing you?
If achieving your goal requires you to compromise your integrity, damage your relationships, tear down other people, or lose yourself along the way, did you really win anything?
In Week 8 of the Summer Shift series , Kevin Lowe challenges the belief that where you finish matters more than how you ran the race. Through a memorable sandcastle competition at the beach, he reveals why success built through shortcuts, selfishness, or sabotage will always leave you feeling empty—even when everyone else thinks you won.
Press play and discover how to pursue your goals with ambition, integrity, and purpose without sacrificing the person you want to become.
In This Episode, You’ll Discover
- Why winning can still feel empty when it costs you your character
- How shortcuts and compromised values quietly destroy your self-respect
- Why helping other people succeed does not diminish your own success
- How to remain competitive without becoming selfish or ruthless
- Why the person you become during the journey matters more than your final position
- How to pursue meaningful success while protecting your relationships and integrity
- What it truly means to win in life—not merely on paper
The Problem With Winning at Any Cost
There is nothing wrong with wanting to win.
There is nothing wrong with setting ambitious goals, pursuing a promotion, growing a business, becoming the best at your craft, or pushing yourself beyond what you thought was possible.
The problem begins when winning becomes the only thing that matters.
A victory may look impressive from the outside. The numbers may be great. The bank account may be growing. Everyone may be applauding your accomplishments.
But none of that can replace your integrity, your relationships, or the peace of knowing you earned your success honestly.
Success that costs you your character is not success worth achieving.
How to Win Without Losing Yourself
1. Win With Integrity
Do not cheat, manipulate, or cut corners just because doing so could get you to the finish line faster.
A shortcut may help you achieve the result, but it can rob you of the pride and self-respect that should come with it.
Run your race in a way that allows you to look back and honestly say:
I earned this. I remained true to myself. I am proud of how I showed up.
2. Win by Lifting Other People
Competition does not require cruelty.
You can be driven, ambitious, and fiercely competitive without tripping the person running beside you. Helping another person does not take away from your own opportunity to succeed.
A rising tide lifts all boats.
The greatest victories are rarely the ones we celebrate alone. They are the ones that allow us to grow while helping the people around us rise, too.
3. Win by Becoming Someone Better
The short-term goal may be reaching the finish line.
The greater goal is becoming a stronger, wiser, more grounded person by the time you get there.
Ask yourself:
- Who am I becoming while pursuing this goal?
- Am I proud of how I am treating people?
- Am I building character or merely collecting accomplishments?
- Will this journey leave me fulfilled when the applause ends?
When the journey transforms you into someone you respect, your final position no longer determines whether you won.
Your Summer Shift Challenge
Think about one goal you are currently pursuing.
It could involve your career, finances, health, relationships, business, or personal development.
Now ask yourself:
Am I pursuing this goal in a way that will make me proud of who I become?
Do not focus only on the finish line. Consider how you are running the race, how you are treating the people around you, and whether your daily choices align with the person you want to be.
Because eventually, just like a sandcastle washed away by the incoming tide, the trophies, titles, and temporary victories will disappear.
What remains is your character, the lives you touched, and the person you became along the way.

Kevin Lowe: What really Does it mean.
Kevin Lowe: At the end of the day?
Kevin Lowe: Today, we're talking about the very real understanding that.
Kevin Lowe: How you run The race matters.
Kevin Lowe: Than where you Finish. I don't care if you come in first place, last place, that doesn't matter.
Kevin Lowe: But how did you run the race?
Kevin Lowe: That's what matters. And that, my friend, is what makes up today's 455th episode of Grit, Grace, and Inspiration.
Kevin Lowe: My friend, what is up? I am your host, Kevin Lowe, bringing you today another episode in our Summer Shift series.
Kevin Lowe: This is week number eight, The week in which we talk about the journey, not the destination.
Kevin Lowe: And most importantly, is how we embark upon that journey, how we run the race, not how we finish it.
Kevin Lowe: Now, in case you are new here, maybe you're just hopping on board the Summer Shift series.

Kevin Lowe: But that is that. Let's talk about today what we're talking about.
Kevin Lowe: This idea of How you run the race.
Kevin Lowe: Is more important Than where you finish. Now, since this is the Summer Shift series.
Kevin Lowe: We might as well go back to the beach.
Kevin Lowe: And today, we're talking about sandcastles. So, I want you to picture.
Kevin Lowe: You're in the midst Of a competition. Who can build the best sandcastle?
Kevin Lowe: Or, okay, maybe you're not somebody who's into building sandcastles.
Kevin Lowe: Maybe it's easier for you to picture some kids down at the beach, and they're participating in a sandcastle contest.
Kevin Lowe: Either way you want to look at it, just a vision. We're at the beach, we're building sandcastles, and we're competing against one another.
Kevin Lowe: Now, you got two different kids, two different people.
Kevin Lowe: One kid, he's a jerk. He's building his sandcastle.
Kevin Lowe: But while he's doing it, he's trying to sabotage the other kids.
Kevin Lowe: He's stealing the shovels.
Kevin Lowe: He's getting the best buckets.
Kevin Lowe: And when nobody's looking, he's knocking over their castle.
Kevin Lowe: He's a jerk.
Kevin Lowe: Now, at the end of the competition, Well, he's the only one with the sandcastle that's still standing, that still looks like anything.
Kevin Lowe: So he wins.
Kevin Lowe: Woo-hoo, good for him. The jerk won the sandcastle contest.
Kevin Lowe: What does that really do for him when he's alone, when he's back at his house that night?
Kevin Lowe: Did he really win anything? No.
Kevin Lowe: He just cheated his way through life, through a competition.
Kevin Lowe: Now, on the other hand, What if we look at another competitor, another person building a sandcastle?
Kevin Lowe: And that person, yeah, they built their sandcastle.
Kevin Lowe: But they helped out the competition. When somebody was struggling, they gave them a hand.
Kevin Lowe: They took the time to give them a shovel because they saw that they didn't have one.
Kevin Lowe: They helped the person next to them. And most of all.
Kevin Lowe: They actually just Enjoyed the entire thing. Yeah, they were being competitive.
Kevin Lowe: They were trying their best, Building the castle.
Kevin Lowe: And at the end, Did they win? Eh, maybe they did.
Kevin Lowe: Maybe they didn't. Maybe they came in third place.
Kevin Lowe: But my gosh They enjoyed the day.
Kevin Lowe: They had a Blast They had fun.
Kevin Lowe: They made friends along the way They ran the race.
Kevin Lowe: Like we should All run the race They did it.
Kevin Lowe: And along the way They became a Better version of themselves They got more out of it.
Kevin Lowe: They won the Journey Not just the race Yes.
Kevin Lowe: And so, at the end of the day, when we think about the sandcastle, we all know what happens.
Kevin Lowe: By tomorrow, there are no sandcastles. The tide comes in and washes it all away.
Kevin Lowe: And so, again, You're left to think, what kid really won?
Kevin Lowe: Who really won?
Kevin Lowe: Was it the kid who was a jerk.
Kevin Lowe: Who cheated?
Kevin Lowe: Or was it the kid who showed up as their best.
Kevin Lowe: Who gave it their all, But also was there to help others along the way?
Kevin Lowe: Obviously, it's the person who cared about how they played the game, how they showed up.
Kevin Lowe: That's the person who truly won, Not just the contest, but won in life.
Kevin Lowe: Now, that was a fun example.
Kevin Lowe: It was a day at the beach. But the fact is true is that this hits close to home in our everyday life.
Kevin Lowe: Because we live In a world obsessed with outcomes. It's all about.
Kevin Lowe: Winning the deal, getting the promotion. And somewhere along the way, We've learned that winning is the only thing that truly matters.
Kevin Lowe: Now, what does that do? This idea that winning is the only thing that matters.
Kevin Lowe: Well, on paper, it looks amazing.
Kevin Lowe: The numbers are great.
Kevin Lowe: Everything is in alignment.
Kevin Lowe: Everything looks fantastic. But you know what it also means?
Kevin Lowe: Is that we have a society of people living a life that are unfulfilled.
Kevin Lowe: That they're going home at the end of the day empty.
Kevin Lowe: Yeah, like I said On paper, it looks great The bank account, it is amazing, But them, their soul, who they are, they're empty inside.
Kevin Lowe: And so if you're achieving success, But it's costing you your character.
Kevin Lowe: My friend, that is no success That any of us.
Kevin Lowe: Should want to achieve.
Kevin Lowe: So the question becomes, how do you focus on.
Kevin Lowe: Still winning the Race, but running the race in a way that you want to?
Kevin Lowe: The way that's going to have you winning, but also feeling fulfilled.
Kevin Lowe: Well, my friend, of course, I've got a few ideas for you. First and foremost.
Kevin Lowe: You have to win with integrity.
Kevin Lowe: What does it look like to run a race with integrity?
Kevin Lowe: Well, it means that you're not cheating. You're not cutting corners.
Kevin Lowe: You understand that shortcuts, yeah, they might get you to the finish line faster, but they rob you of your own self-respect.
Kevin Lowe: They rob you of the ability to go home at night and say to yourself, wow, I really did it.
Kevin Lowe: No, instead, you lie awake at Night realizing that.
Kevin Lowe: Everybody else thinks you're somebody you're not because you're a cheater.
Kevin Lowe: You just cut corners.
Kevin Lowe: You Found a shortcut.
Kevin Lowe: And you cheated. And that's the only reason you won.
Kevin Lowe: And my friend, you wake up the next morning and that feeling's even heavier.
Kevin Lowe: Weighing heavy on your mind. Instead.
Kevin Lowe: I want you To run the race.
Kevin Lowe: I want you to show Up with integrity.
Kevin Lowe: Not for anybody else, but for you.
Kevin Lowe: Second, you win by lifting others.
Kevin Lowe: You be the kid on the beach in the sandcastle contest who is helping their competitors.
Kevin Lowe: You understand that winning is only awesome when you can do it with others.
Kevin Lowe: When you help other people succeed.
Kevin Lowe: My friend, you will succeed.
Kevin Lowe: A rising tide lifts all boats. And so I encourage you that.
Kevin Lowe: Yes, in competition, we have competitors, but it doesn't Mean that you have to trip them while you're racing. It doesn't mean that you have to knock over their sandcastle.
Kevin Lowe: No, you play fair.
Kevin Lowe: You play by the rules.
Kevin Lowe: You can be fierce. You can be competitive. But you don't have to be a jerk. You don't have.
Kevin Lowe: To cheat your way, steal your way through life. No, lift people up, Help others succeed.
Kevin Lowe: And my friend, I'm telling you, you will succeed as well.
Kevin Lowe: Next, you win by becoming somebody better.
Kevin Lowe: Yeah, the short-term goal is winning the race. The long-term goal Is becoming somebody different.
Kevin Lowe: By the time you reach the finish line.
Kevin Lowe: It's building character. It's building you all by becoming somebody better because you're somebody who ran the race and showed up like you know you want to, where you're building fulfillment.
Kevin Lowe: You're not just competing in a competition.
Kevin Lowe: So at the end of the day, at the end of the journey, The race, the competition.
Kevin Lowe: Who did you become? What did you learn?
Kevin Lowe: Because if it turned you into somebody that you're proud of.
Kevin Lowe: Well, then my friend, Again, it doesn't matter what position you ended in.
Kevin Lowe: You've already won.
Kevin Lowe: All of these things said, I want you to think of the people who you admire the most, The athletes, the superstars.
Kevin Lowe: Who are the ones that you really and truly Look up to. It's probably not the person who's always been on top.
Kevin Lowe: Maybe instead, it's the person who you've just really admired, watching how they are on the field.
Kevin Lowe: They're lending a hand, picking their competitors up.
Kevin Lowe: They're over on the sidelines.
Kevin Lowe: Giving high fives, cheering on people.
Kevin Lowe: They're the guy who is there.
Kevin Lowe: Making a difference, showing up.
Kevin Lowe: Those, quite honestly.
Kevin Lowe: Are probably the people who you really and truly admire.
Kevin Lowe: Or maybe you're a parent and you look at your kids And you think to yourself, my gosh, I don't want them thinking of that person on TV as their hero, because look at what that person's actually like in real life or how they're actually playing the game. It's dirty.
Kevin Lowe: Even though they're winning, how did they win?
Kevin Lowe: Think of who those people are and think of the reasons why you either don't really like them or.
Kevin Lowe: Think of the reasons why you do Really love that person. My friend, that's what I want for you.
Kevin Lowe: I want you to get to be the person who's not always on the top of the podium.
Kevin Lowe: But instead, it's the person who showed up with integrity, the person who showed up ready to build themselves, to lift others, to live every day, To run every race, to compete in every competition.
Kevin Lowe: Not just as this one instance, but instead as another building block of life.
Kevin Lowe: My friend...
Kevin Lowe: It's not about how you finish the race.
Kevin Lowe: It's how you run the race.
Kevin Lowe: Run the race in a way in which is going to make you proud.
Kevin Lowe: When at the end of the day, when you go to bed at night, And it's just you and your thoughts.
Kevin Lowe: That you can end the day feeling proud and honored that you showed Up as the best version.
Kevin Lowe: Of you.
