00:00:00.937 --> 00:00:06.797
What's up, my friend, and how are you today? Hopefully your day is absolutely amazing.
00:00:08.117 --> 00:00:13.317
Today, I hope we're going to build on that. And to do so, I want to start off with a question.
00:00:13.497 --> 00:00:16.637
What do you think of when you think of inspiration?
00:00:17.297 --> 00:00:23.337
When you hear that somebody is inspirational, or you hear that a story is inspirational,
00:00:23.777 --> 00:00:27.497
what do you immediately think of? What is it that comes to your mind?
00:00:28.117 --> 00:00:31.817
Now, whatever you just thought of inside of today's episode,
00:00:32.197 --> 00:00:33.297
I'm going to change that.
00:00:33.997 --> 00:00:39.337
Yeah, we're going to flip inspiration on its head because today we're not focusing
00:00:39.337 --> 00:00:44.837
on the big, shiny, out of touch goals, the things of superheroes,
00:00:45.117 --> 00:00:47.277
the things that are made for the movies.
00:00:47.557 --> 00:00:52.377
No, today we're getting real. We're talking about the everyday stuff,
00:00:52.597 --> 00:00:56.157
the middle of the night stuff, the stuff when nobody's looking.
00:00:56.157 --> 00:01:01.077
That's the stuff that determines what is really inspiration, in my opinion.
00:01:01.537 --> 00:01:06.557
So if you're up for this, well, then I hope you stay tuned.
00:01:07.437 --> 00:01:12.677
This is episode 320, where me and you are exploring the world of inspiration.
00:01:14.957 --> 00:01:18.897
Yo, are you ready to flip the script on life? Because those bad days,
00:01:18.977 --> 00:01:20.817
they're just doors to better days.
00:01:21.097 --> 00:01:24.977
And that's exactly what we do here at Grit, Grace, and Inspiration.
00:01:24.977 --> 00:01:28.697
Your host, Kevin Lowe, he's been flipping the script on his own life,
00:01:28.897 --> 00:01:33.317
turning over 20 years of being completely blind into straight up inspiration,
00:01:33.557 --> 00:01:36.017
motivation, and encouragement just for you.
00:01:36.197 --> 00:01:41.517
So, kick back, relax, and let me introduce you to your host, Kevin Lowe.
00:01:41.517 --> 00:01:46.277
If you've been hanging out with me over the past couple of weeks,
00:01:46.397 --> 00:01:53.057
you will know that we've been diving into three components that I believe kind
00:01:53.057 --> 00:01:55.457
of formed this amazing powerhouse trio.
00:01:55.957 --> 00:02:00.677
Of course, the first up was grit. Then came grace.
00:02:01.577 --> 00:02:05.597
And what's left is today's episode, inspiration. Inspiration.
00:02:06.077 --> 00:02:12.317
Now, remember, when we're talking about inspiration, we're not talking about grand achievements.
00:02:12.537 --> 00:02:16.777
We're not talking about pie-in-the-sky type dreams.
00:02:16.977 --> 00:02:23.817
No, we're talking about the everyday stuff, the stuff that we go through when nobody is looking.
00:02:23.977 --> 00:02:31.117
We're talking about the stuff that is us, you, me, choosing to push through
00:02:31.117 --> 00:02:34.597
the hard times in life, choosing to show up.
00:02:34.597 --> 00:02:40.757
It's choosing to get out of bed in the morning to put your shoes on to get dressed
00:02:40.757 --> 00:02:45.957
to walk out the door with a smile on your face when really all you really wanted
00:02:45.957 --> 00:02:49.257
to do was to put the covers over your head and go back to sleep.
00:02:50.172 --> 00:02:54.052
To help illustrate what I'm talking about in this realm of inspiration,
00:02:54.492 --> 00:03:00.052
I've chosen three of our past guests, three people, each one who has a story
00:03:00.052 --> 00:03:04.932
that is a beautiful example of unintentional inspiration.
00:03:08.312 --> 00:03:15.792
First up, we have Remy Storak. He is a childhood cancer survivor turned wilderness guide.
00:03:16.132 --> 00:03:19.912
My interview with Remy was absolutely incredible.
00:03:20.172 --> 00:03:25.352
To hear the contrast in his story, as a child, he had cancer.
00:03:25.532 --> 00:03:31.032
And a big part of Remy's story was a kid's cancer camp that he would go to.
00:03:31.152 --> 00:03:33.232
I believe it was in Alberta, Canada.
00:03:33.672 --> 00:03:40.392
Every year, he would go to this camp, him and other kids all battling some type of cancer.
00:03:40.992 --> 00:03:46.992
It was the kind of camp where scars are celebrated, where everybody is just the same.
00:03:47.632 --> 00:03:50.152
Nobody's worrying about being picked on because they're different,
00:03:50.272 --> 00:03:53.412
because everybody at this camp was going through something.
00:03:54.172 --> 00:03:59.852
But something profound happened year after year was that these young children,
00:04:00.072 --> 00:04:06.852
Remy included, had to learn a hard lesson about life because some years their
00:04:06.852 --> 00:04:08.952
friend didn't show back up.
00:04:09.072 --> 00:04:16.452
That friend lost their fight. And it was one summer, one loss of a friend,
00:04:16.552 --> 00:04:19.752
when Remy and his friends made a pact.
00:04:20.627 --> 00:04:24.827
That they were going to live for that friend. They were going to live twice
00:04:24.827 --> 00:04:29.707
as much, play twice as hard, yell twice as loud.
00:04:29.947 --> 00:04:33.947
All because of their friend who didn't get to be there.
00:04:34.507 --> 00:04:43.207
Now, as Remy got older and he would end up being too old to attend the camp anymore.
00:04:43.627 --> 00:04:47.967
Well, he would keep going because it was such a big part of his life.
00:04:47.967 --> 00:04:51.127
But this time as one of the camp counselors.
00:04:51.467 --> 00:04:57.507
And then, of course, there came the one summer when Remy set out on a new adventure.
00:04:57.687 --> 00:05:02.527
An adventure through the wilderness with his brothers, who were wilderness guides.
00:05:03.707 --> 00:05:09.227
He went with them through the heart of the Canadian forest, through the mountains,
00:05:09.407 --> 00:05:10.807
guiding a pack of horses.
00:05:11.167 --> 00:05:18.907
The story was absolutely insane. Insane. A total dream for any adventure seeker.
00:05:19.027 --> 00:05:23.167
If that is you, definitely check out the show notes where I will leave a link
00:05:23.167 --> 00:05:28.007
to each of these guests' past interviews so that you can listen to them.
00:05:28.787 --> 00:05:36.267
But what we gain from the story of Remy in regards to inspiration is that oftentimes
00:05:36.267 --> 00:05:42.227
inspiration, it comes in us deciding to do something more.
00:05:42.227 --> 00:05:45.127
To live for something bigger than ourselves.
00:05:46.027 --> 00:05:51.067
It's the decision to live fully, no matter what life throws in your way.
00:05:51.467 --> 00:05:56.667
So maybe I ask you, what could you start doing more of?
00:05:57.447 --> 00:06:02.027
Who could you start living for? What purpose are you living for?
00:06:02.107 --> 00:06:04.687
Do you wanna be sure that you're remembered for?
00:06:05.747 --> 00:06:10.567
What can you start doing to live a little bit bigger, play a little bit harder,
00:06:10.727 --> 00:06:12.627
to live a little bit louder?
00:06:12.847 --> 00:06:21.307
All from the inspiration of Remy, a kid who taught us some profound lessons for life.
00:06:22.087 --> 00:06:29.827
Next on my list is Bart Walsh. One of the most amazing interviews I've ever done on this podcast.
00:06:30.727 --> 00:06:35.207
Bart is a guy who lives in the land down under. Yes, down in Australia.
00:06:35.827 --> 00:06:40.427
Time zones, they're a beast sometimes when we're trying to do an interview.
00:06:40.907 --> 00:06:46.007
But boy, was it worth it. Because I had the most amazing conversation with Bart
00:06:46.007 --> 00:06:52.087
Walsh, a man who has the most heartfelt, heartwarming story that you'll ever hear.
00:06:52.387 --> 00:06:55.587
And yet, that doesn't mean that it was easy.
00:06:55.947 --> 00:07:00.627
Matter of fact, Bart Walsh is a man who had it all going for him.
00:07:01.247 --> 00:07:05.087
Until one day that he found a lump in his jaw.
00:07:05.747 --> 00:07:10.167
And, well, that would set forth a new chapter in his life.
00:07:10.487 --> 00:07:14.967
He had built his life on his acting ability, on his looks.
00:07:15.467 --> 00:07:20.747
And now he had this massive tumor right there on his jaw.
00:07:21.727 --> 00:07:27.007
He had to undergo intense surgery. It was really tough, really hard on him.
00:07:27.167 --> 00:07:29.927
But Bart, he kept going.
00:07:30.107 --> 00:07:36.807
He found new ways, new paths. He kept realizing that it's not just one path
00:07:36.807 --> 00:07:39.267
on life that we have to be on.
00:07:39.407 --> 00:07:43.507
No, the path can change. The path can curve, twist.
00:07:43.807 --> 00:07:47.987
We just have to know when it's time to make the turn.
00:07:49.047 --> 00:07:54.247
Now, here's the thing. Bart would go on to become a well-known,
00:07:54.247 --> 00:07:56.947
amazing man in the fitness industry.
00:07:56.947 --> 00:08:04.227
A guy who owns multiple gyms, a guy who built his life on his physique,
00:08:04.347 --> 00:08:06.767
on getting stronger, building muscle.
00:08:07.047 --> 00:08:11.907
But then, of course, there came a point when he realized that something else was wrong.
00:08:12.227 --> 00:08:19.047
Long story short, Bart would end up telling us that he has a condition that is incurable.
00:08:19.047 --> 00:08:25.027
And slowly over time, it's rendering his limbs useless,
00:08:25.267 --> 00:08:31.907
losing all the feeling from the tips of his toes up through his legs,
00:08:32.027 --> 00:08:34.727
from the tips of his fingers up his arms.
00:08:35.827 --> 00:08:41.507
But what Bart said in that interview that was so profound, was so amazing,
00:08:41.587 --> 00:08:47.707
so inspirational, is that he said, I decided to not be the victim of something horrible.
00:08:47.707 --> 00:08:52.627
He took control of his life, control over the things that he could control.
00:08:53.747 --> 00:08:57.067
And in regards to this theme of inspiration,
00:08:57.587 --> 00:09:05.047
I believe that what Bart's story shows us is, again, is that inspiration isn't
00:09:05.047 --> 00:09:10.447
always in these big goals achieved, these big monumental tasks,
00:09:10.667 --> 00:09:17.707
but rather sometimes it's just about the small everyday tasks that we do in
00:09:17.707 --> 00:09:19.987
spite of it all, in spite of the pain,
00:09:20.227 --> 00:09:22.887
in spite of the hurt, in spite of the fear.
00:09:22.887 --> 00:09:28.447
I don't know about you, but when I look at Bart and his story,
00:09:28.667 --> 00:09:31.967
inspiration is one of the first words I think of.
00:09:32.747 --> 00:09:37.627
Now, if I took you all the way down to Australia, now I'm going to bring you
00:09:37.627 --> 00:09:42.547
all the way back up to my own neck of the woods, my own neighborhood here in East Central Florida.
00:09:42.927 --> 00:09:49.227
I had featured on the podcast quite a while back was the story of Robert Mudge,
00:09:49.467 --> 00:09:53.507
a guy who went to the same high school that I did, Seabreeze High School.
00:09:53.927 --> 00:09:58.187
He had just graduated. He was headed off to college along with his friends.
00:09:58.787 --> 00:10:03.947
And then there came the moment, you know, the moment when everything changes.
00:10:04.487 --> 00:10:07.687
For Robert, it was a car accident.
00:10:08.127 --> 00:10:13.927
Him and his buddies had been out that night. And while on the way home, they had an accident.
00:10:14.147 --> 00:10:16.427
One of his best friends would lose his life.
00:10:16.787 --> 00:10:21.547
Robert, he would become a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the neck down.
00:10:21.747 --> 00:10:26.767
He would undergo years of rehab, of therapy.
00:10:27.207 --> 00:10:32.307
Still to this day, years and years later, he still fights every day.
00:10:32.607 --> 00:10:40.007
And for that, my friend, I look at him and I have such admiration for a man who who has not stopped.
00:10:40.347 --> 00:10:44.407
He has a beautiful wife. He has a child. He has a career.
00:10:44.867 --> 00:10:51.067
And I can guarantee you that if you asked him, Robert Mudge would tell you that
00:10:51.067 --> 00:10:53.567
he's definitely not inspirational.
00:10:54.147 --> 00:10:58.927
But that's the power of it all, is that most of the time, the people who are
00:10:58.927 --> 00:11:01.787
truly inspirational don't even realize it.
00:11:01.867 --> 00:11:07.787
The lesson I want you to take from Robert's story in regards to this topic of
00:11:07.787 --> 00:11:11.607
inspiration is that sometimes inspiration is never giving up,
00:11:11.707 --> 00:11:13.827
even when the odds are stacked against you.
00:11:14.147 --> 00:11:18.767
Even when you don't got a chance at succeeding, you try it anyways.
00:11:19.787 --> 00:11:24.227
Even though the world tells you that you're not going to be able to, you try it anyways.
00:11:24.987 --> 00:11:32.167
Even though in your own mind, you tell yourself, wow, I don't think I'm going
00:11:32.167 --> 00:11:34.187
to be able to do it. you do it anyways.
00:11:35.047 --> 00:11:40.807
Sometimes inspiration is just showing up day after day, doing the thing in spite of it all.
00:11:41.027 --> 00:11:45.927
For myself, when I look at Robert Mudge, that's what I see in him.
00:11:46.897 --> 00:11:51.197
So here's the question to tie it all together. What are these stories?
00:11:51.457 --> 00:11:54.577
What do these three individual people have in common?
00:11:55.017 --> 00:12:00.637
None of these three set out to be inspirational. They weren't trying to be heroes.
00:12:00.717 --> 00:12:02.517
They were just living their lives.
00:12:03.317 --> 00:12:08.297
And you could say they've just been trying to do the best they can with what they have.
00:12:08.297 --> 00:12:15.777
And yet, here today, we can look at them and see that each one in their own
00:12:15.777 --> 00:12:18.797
way has become a beacon of inspiration.
00:12:19.357 --> 00:12:24.717
This, my friend, is what I consider the unintentional power of inspiration.
00:12:25.657 --> 00:12:29.697
Inspiration, it's not something that you aim for. It's something that comes naturally.
00:12:30.277 --> 00:12:36.397
So, here at the end of today's episode, I want to turn the table and I want
00:12:36.397 --> 00:12:39.857
to speak to you. Do you think of yourself as inspirational?
00:12:40.277 --> 00:12:44.037
Do you feel like you don't have a story big enough?
00:12:44.277 --> 00:12:50.677
You've not had things happen tragic enough to be considered inspirational?
00:12:51.237 --> 00:12:56.437
If so, here's what I want you to remember. It is what today was all about.
00:12:56.617 --> 00:12:58.837
You don't have to do anything extraordinary.
00:12:59.297 --> 00:13:02.557
You don't have to be on a movie screen or on a stage.
00:13:03.237 --> 00:13:10.237
You just simply have to refuse to give up. You have to just keep showing up,
00:13:10.257 --> 00:13:13.117
getting out of bed, doing what you have to do.
00:13:13.417 --> 00:13:17.997
You take care of those that you need to take care of. You go to work because,
00:13:18.077 --> 00:13:22.137
well, you have to put food on the table. You have to pay the bills.
00:13:22.897 --> 00:13:26.177
You live every day with courage and authenticity.
00:13:27.057 --> 00:13:32.237
You don't think of yourself as anything special. But the truth of the matter
00:13:32.237 --> 00:13:34.557
is, is that you are. You are special.
00:13:35.097 --> 00:13:39.817
You are amazing. You are inspirational in your own unique way.
00:13:40.037 --> 00:13:46.397
And that is what I want you to realize at the end of today's episode is that
00:13:46.397 --> 00:13:51.017
inspiration comes in all different shapes and forms.
00:13:51.617 --> 00:13:58.577
And I believe each and every one of us are inspirational in our own unique way.
00:13:58.877 --> 00:14:02.017
With that said, my name is Kevin Lowe.
00:14:02.017 --> 00:14:08.237
This was another episode of grit grace and inspiration a podcast on a mission
00:14:08.237 --> 00:14:15.137
to inspire the world and more specifically you to never give up on life even
00:14:15.137 --> 00:14:16.477
when it may feel like life.
00:14:16.720 --> 00:14:36.882
Music.
